Roof Bolter & Air Drill Test Bench

The customer had an existing test bench which was manually controlled. This was used for repairs and servicing. They wanted to automate the test process to give repeatable tests and record the results for their records and to provide test reports.

We used a B&R PP45 PLC to do the control.
The PLC monitors and records; forward and reverse torque, leg thrust, compressed air usage and noise, as well as controlling the air supply pressure. The various drill models are stored in an array in the PLC – the operator can select the model to be tested. Torque and air flow are measured as the drill is loaded up until stalling.

The results are stored in a file which can be sent to a test report sheet. The PLC has a built in web server so they can access the records from any PC on their local network.
